ToggleThe Puffs in the government's crosshairs
Attractive flavors
One of the main reasons for their popularity lies in the wide variety of flavors available: mint, strawberry, melon, iced grape, pineapple, mango… These flavors can appeal to young people and give these e-cigarettes a harmless, even playful, appearance. But behind this facade lies a product containing nicotine and posing health risks.
An affordable price for teenagers
Despite being banned for those under 18, Puffs remain accessible to young people thanks to their attractive price. Sold in supermarkets and tobacconists, they are often cheaper than traditional cigarettes, making them easier for younger people to adopt. The government therefore wants to curb their sale in order to protect the health of teenagers.
The health consequences
While Puffs may reduce some of the risks associated with smoking due to the absence of combustion, they are not entirely harmless. The presence of nicotine makes these e-cigarettes addictive and exposes users to health problems similar to those caused by tobacco. Furthermore, some studies show a gateway effect to traditional cigarette smoking among young Puff users.
Legislation that needs strengthening
To combat the growing popularity of Puffs among young people, the government plans to strengthen existing legislation by outright banning their sale. This measure is expected to be accompanied by increased inspections at points of sale and awareness campaigns about the dangers of smoking and nicotine.
Alternatives to consider
While banning Puffs is an important step in the fight against youth smoking, it is not enough. It is also essential to offer credible alternatives and provide information about existing resources to support those who want to quit smoking or avoid starting.
- Patches : Nicotine patches are an effective substitute solution for gradually reducing addiction.
- Gums : just like patches, chewing gums allow for a gentle withdrawal thanks to their gradual release of nicotine.
- Electronic cigarettes : although they are often criticized, classic electronic cigarettes without attractive flavors can be an alternative to Puffs and traditional tobacco.
- Behavioral methods : support from healthcare professionals, support groups, apps… Psychological methods have proven effective in helping people quit smoking.
In short, Élisabeth Borne's announcement of the ban on Puffs reflects a desire to protect the health of young people and combat the normalization of tobacco and nicotine use. It remains crucial, however, to raise awareness of the dangers of these products and to offer credible alternatives to support those who wish to quit smoking.
