CBD and driving: the grey area
This is one of the most frequently asked questions — and the answer is not binary. Three levels to distinguish.
Level 1: Effect on alertness. CBD in moderate doses has no psychoactive effect and does not significantly impair cognitive function in most users. However, at high doses, the sedative effect can decrease responsiveness, which is incompatible with driving. This is a matter of common sense, not legislation: if you feel drowsy after taking CBD, do not drive.
Level 2: The risk of a positive saliva test. Roadside checks in France look for THC, not CBD. However, even a CBD product that perfectly complies with regulations (less than 0.3% THC) can, with regular use at high doses, accumulate enough THC in the body to trigger a positive saliva test. The risk is low but not zero, particularly with full-spectrum oils. In summary: we don't know if it's dangerous, we can't prove it's safe, so as a precaution, we abstain. Is there a risk of overdose?
The good news is that, to date, there are no documented cases of fatal CBD overdose in humans. The median lethal dose (LD50) of CBD in animals is very high, and CBD's acute toxicity profile is extremely favorable compared to most medications on the market. Check the extraction method. Supercritical CO₂ or controlled ethanol are clean methods; extractions with unpurified hydrocarbon solvents can leave problematic residues.
