- The COVID-19 pandemic has fueled widespread changes in the social consumption of cannabis among those who use it at least once a year.
- Nearly three-quarters (72%) of these users reported a change in their cannabis use with others; among the 28% who reported no change, some likely continued to share with other household members (i.e., a pod) or had not previously used cannabis with others.
- During the pandemic, 1 in 5 users reportedly stopped using cannabis with others, and 1 in 10 stopped using it altogether; among those who had never used cannabis socially before the pandemic, 33% have not used it since, highlighting the cohort’s reliance on friends as a source.
- The pandemic has affected the mental health of many cannabis users: 38% of users reported that their mental health worsened during the pandemic, while 19% reported that it improved.
Nearly half (48%) of women and 46% of users aged 18 to 34 reported that their mental health worsened, compared to 29% of men and 33% of those aged 35 and older (women and younger people were also more likely to report fair or poor mental health in absolute terms).
